Formation of Directed Beams from Atom Lasers

چکیده

The problem of creating well–collimated beams of atoms escaping from a trap is studied. This problem is of high importance for the realization of atom lasers. Nonadiabatic dynamics of neutral atoms in nonuniform magnetic fields, typical of quadrupole magnetic traps, has been considered. The main result of this report is that an unusual semiconfining regime of motion is found, when atoms are confined from one side of an axis but are not confined from another side. This regime can be achieved by means of only magnetic fields. The formed atomic beam can be forwarded in arbitrary direction.

Paired atom laser beams created via four-wave mixing

Sources of matter waves gained a dramatic improvement with the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute gases and the development of the atom laser [1]. Like optical lasers before them, atom lasers can produce Heisenberg-limited beam profiles and promise high spectral density through their dramatically lower linewidth. Another exciting possibility resulting from having such a c...

Atom lasers and phase coherence of atomic Bose gases

Using continuous radio-frequency waves a coherent beam of atoms can be extracted from a magnetically trapped gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate. These novel atomic beams have matter-wave properties that are very similar to those of laser light in classical optics and are therefore called atom lasers. Furthermore, coupling out atoms from a Bose gas allows one to probe the dramatic changes in the p...

Quantum correlated twin atomic beams via photodissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate

The successful production of Bose-Einstein condensates ~BEC! has led to measurements indicating that BECs have coherence properties similar to lasers. This suggests that the next stage in obtaining precision measurements in atom optics is the production of atom beams with sub-Poissonian atom statistics—as has been widely demonstrated in photonics applications. Indeed, there is already some indi...

Influence of lasers propagation delay on the sensitivity of atom interferometers

In atom interferometers based on two photon transitions, the delay induced by the difference of the laser beams paths makes the interferometer sensitive to the fluctuations of the frequency of the lasers. We first study, in the general case, how the laser frequency noise affects the performance of the interferometer measurement. Our calculations are compared with the measurements performed on o...

Atom Interferometry in an Optical Cavity

Atom interferometry, in which atomic waves are coherently split and later recombined, has been called the Swiss Army knife of atomic physics because of its numerous applications. Atom interferometers can be used to study gravity, observe quantum effects, and measure fundamental constants. However, the spitting of atomic beams has always been a challenging task. Several beam splitters for atoms ...
